Weathering the January storms was a great test and a testament to our resilience.
In recent years, public authorities have broadened the definition of resilience. We are now looking at how we can build a better and more sustainable future by conserving resources, reducing our carbon footprint and integrating the health of the planet into our long-term planning. Carpinteria Sanitary District has been productive and focused in our efforts to build that overall resilience. With that in mind, we have some news to share.
CSD has nearly 45 linear miles of sewage pipelines that carry wastewater from your homes and businesses to the treatment plant. For decades we have used closed circuit television (CCTV) equipment to regularly inspect every inch of our collection system to identify faults and prioritize repair and replacement projects before small problems become big ones.
When it came time to replace our existing CCTV vehicle – a 14 year old petrol powered van with an integrated petrol generator – we made resiliency a priority. In January, the county received a new all-electric CCTV inspection vehicle.
The device is built on top of a 2023 Ford E-Transit Van that has a range of 100 miles – perfect for the work we do daily in Carpinteria. The camera system, computers and other equipment are powered by a bank of lithium phosphate batteries charged by roof-mounted solar panels. The new CCTV van does everything we expect from it and does it with zero emissions.
To blow our own horn, CSD is one of the very first adopters of an all-electric CCTV sewer inspection truck in California. As more public bodies develop plans for resilience, vehicles like this will become a key investment in a brighter future. The technology has arrived. We can now best serve our customers and do our part to protect the planet.
We also recently had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon and welcoming the public to CSD’s new administration building and boardroom at 5300 Sixth Street. The contrast between our new permanent building and the aging portable buildings we had inhabited is stark, to say the least.
The new administration building is built to withstand a 100 year flood and from the building design to the landscaping, electrical and heating, every part of the new facility reflects environmental sustainability and resilience.
As a “net zero” building, it is designed to be self-powered or even a grid supplier of power to the grid. The 20kW solar array on the roof generates enough electricity to run all building systems including heating and cooling, which is achieved through the use of highly efficient electric heat pumps.
Designed to harness the power of Mother Nature, the building is oriented to take full advantage of natural light and air conditioning, honoring the ancient axiom of “don’t waste, don’t want”. The selected building materials offer an optimal insulation value with at the same time very little maintenance over the lifetime of the construction. Fully indigenous landscaping and a state-of-the-art irrigation system help make local water resources more sustainable.
If you’ve lived in Carpinteria for a while, you may know that Sixth Street is prone to flooding during heavy and prolonged rain events. To protect our new administration building, we raised it well above the flood level. As rain lashed the Central Coast in January’s storms, our new administration building stayed high and dry.
